Macon elementary school students excel in reading

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – “It’s like being in a new world but you’re actually still in the world,” said Media Specialist Jane Hardy.

To the average person, reading is no more than just a hobby, but to these two Lane Elementary School students, it’s that and then some.

Meet Cylis Milline and Jeremy Wang.

They’re two third graders bringing new meaning to the term friendly competition.

The goal: Having the most AR reading points and the reward? Lunchroom bragging rights as the top reader in school.

“Jeremy had the highest points for the last nine weeks,” said Hardy.

As of this nine weeks Cylis is leading with a whopping 176 points.

“It’s an honor to me,” said Cylis.

And his pal Jeremy couldn’t be anymore proud.

“He’s my friend,” said Jeremy.

The school’s goal for third graders is to reach 20 AR points, but Jeremy and Cylis both agree it’s their friendship pushing them to aspire to be higher.

“He’s competitive and he tries to get more points than me so that drives me to get more points,” said Cylis.

And even though he’s ahead this time, Cylis still wants everyone to win at what he loves–reading.

“If you love to read I’m happy for you.”

It’s the passion they have for reading that’s helping build their bond through books.
