Macon church celebrates 145th anniversary

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Greater Antioch Baptist Church required a police escort down the streets of Macon Saturday morning.

Church members participated in a symbolic march from their old place of worship to the new one.

The church celebrated its 145th anniversary.

The march went from the post office on Rocky Creek Road to the church on Greter street.

Church Pastor Tyrese Ivey says it’s about starting something new.

“We’re a church now that we have a new generation coming up, so we gotta learn how to go from old to new so we’ve got to break out of certain traditions and that’s what we’re doing now we’re trying to break out of certain traditions, so we can bring in our younger generation and also so we can carry a church,” said Ivey.

Church members ate a hearty lunch afterward, and Ivey says he hopes his church will continue for at least another 145 years after this one.
