Macon man arrested after attempted armed robbery at BP gas station

Deputies say the suspect tried to take cash from an ATM, pulled a gun and ran before being arrested.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Bibb County deputies arrested a Macon man Monday after an attempted armed robbery at a BP gas station on Hawkinsville Road, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, it happened just after 2 p.m. at 7285 Hawkinsville Road. Deputies say a man entered the store and approached a clerk who was loading an ATM. The man took a cash box “by force” and tried to leave the business, the release said.

When the store manager confronted him, the suspect pulled out a gun. During a struggle, he dropped the cash box and ran from the store, heading north on Hawkinsville Road, according to the release.

No injuries were reported.

Deputies responding to the scene saw the suspect and chased him on foot. He was arrested near the railroad tracks in the 6800 block of Hawkinsville Road.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Mitchell Todd Baggarly of Macon. He was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged with armed robbery and willful obstruction of law enforcement officers.

Baggarly is being held without bond.
