Five new school zone speed cameras going live in Macon-Bibb this week

Drivers will receive only warnings for the first 30 days before citations begin in October.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to slow down as five new school zone cameras will be activated starting this week.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, the cameras will begin operating on Wednesday, September 3. For the first 30 days, through October 3, drivers caught speeding in the zones will receive only warnings. After that, citations will be issued and no more warnings will be given.

The cameras will only be active during school hours when flashing lights are on. The new locations are:

  • Northwoods Academy (709 Pierce Avenue): 7:20 a.m.-9:20 a.m. and 2-4 p.m.
  • Bruce Elementary (3660 Houston Avenue): 7:20 a.m.-9:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m.-4:20 p.m.
  • James H. Porter Elementary (5802 School Road): 7:20 a.m.-9:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m.-4:20 p.m.
  • John R. Lewis Elementary (3522 Greenbriar Road): 7:20 a.m.-9:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m.-4:20 p.m.
  • Martin Luther King Elementary (1301 Shurling Drive): 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Deputies say they will also be out monitoring school zones. The sheriff’s office reminded motorists to obey the speed limit, watch for buses loading and unloading children and be alert for children walking, bicycling or waiting at bus stops.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and leave early to allow for heavy traffic around schools during drop-off and pickup times.
