Macon-Bibb Mayor sees his county from a whole new perspective

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert put a safety helmet on, grabbed his bike and went for a ride. The 68-year-old mayor went for a cruise to see what it would be like if his city had a safe and protected bike network.

The mayor was joined by other county employees. A pop-up minimum grid network is already in place from a recent event. At the county, the wheels are already turning in hopes of bringing a nine mile route that connects eight different neighborhoods to the downtown business area.

Alex Morrison, the Director of Urban development for Macon-Bibb said, “We want to make sure people have a equitable, sustainable transportation  opportunity to connect them from their homes to jobs in a safe and comfortable way.”

The mayor believes the protected bike network is essential. He said, “Cities of the future are going to have to be walkable and more bikeable if we are to attract young people and people interested in a healthy lifestyle.”

Mayor Reichert will be traveling to Copenhagen, Denmark soon.   Copenhagen is known as the most bike-friendly city in the world.
