Macon-Bibb Literacy Alliance celebrates fifth annual literacy week

The Macon-Bibb Mayor’s Literacy Alliance is highlighting the importance of literacy for children and adults during its fifth annual Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Macon-Bibb Mayor’s Literacy Alliance is celebrating its fifth annual Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, highlighting the importance of literacy for both children and adults.

The alliance works with community organizations to support literacy throughout Macon-Bibb County. Executive Director Jim Montgomery says supporting adults and children goes hand in hand.

“Research says that when learning is reinforced at home, children are much more successful,” Montgomery said. “There are a number of adults who also benefit from literacy services. Those who may not have received those services earlier on in life for a particular reason. But it’s important that we empower the adults so that they can work with the children.”

Montgomery says the alliance has worked to bring more people and organizations together around literacy. The group also focuses on areas including digital literacy, financial literacy and workforce development.

He says the alliance has seen an increase in literacy in both the school system and the community.

“There has been an increase, obviously in the school system as well as in the community,” he said. “We feel that more parents are becoming equipped to work with their children at home because of the various events and the things we’ve done to contribute.”

The alliance says support has grown through community events, collaboration and needs assessments.

The fifth annual Adult Education and Family Literacy Week continues through the week, with activities focused on supporting students and adults.
