Macon-Bibb County ordered to close inert landfill
Macon-Bibb’s Solid Waste Director Kevin Barkley said it will cost about $1.2 million dollars to close the landfill. Workers will cap it with two feet of dirt. Importing dirt to close the landfill is the majority of the cost.
“There’s a lot of residents that use the Walker Road Landfill to get rid of yard waste. They’re not going to be able to do that anymore. We’re trying to get the word out to them that they can either keep it in place or take it to other facilities,” said Barkley.
The Houston County and Twiggs County landfills are two options for residents. Macon-Bibb’s Assistant County Manager said they’re talking with a nearby government that might help fund about 80% of the money needed for the closing.
