‘You are literally going to be taking Christmas’: Macon-Bibb County employee
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County residents were invited to express their concerns and ask questions about the 2019 budget at a public hearing.
Residents spoke of their frustration with the county’s projected $16 million deficit Tuesday night.
“Your employees are working with less and less staff and now you’re asking them to work with less pay as well,” said Alex Grubbs, Macon-Bibb resident.
Grubbs was upset that commissioners are proposing asking county employees to contribute 4% of their salaries to their pension plans.
“This is going to hit the county’s lowest paid employees the worst. You are literally going to be taking Christmas, meals, birthdays, college education funds off their tables and out of their bank accounts,” said Grubbs.
Even Bibb County’s Sheriff David Davis expressed his concerns before the public hearing.
“We’re taking food out of your family’s plate, but yet we’re going to give food to the family down the street,” said Sheriff Davis to commissioners.
He was referring to the commission continuing to fund around $10 million to non-profits and museums.
“These are organizations that yes, we need, but why are your employees asked to tighten their belt but you’re steady handing to them?” said another resident, Garin Flonders. “Ask them to tighten their belt.”
No decisions were made at the hearing, but residents spoke, in hopes that commissioners would listen.
“Balancing the budget on the backs of your employees, is not a good idea,” said another resident.
The budget has to be passed by the commission by June 30th.
