Macon-Bibb County EMA to hold disaster volunteer summit

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With September being National Preparedness Month, Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) wants to make sure you have a plan in case disaster strikes.

“When we talk about preparedness, the big thing is you need to ready for anything,” said EMA Director, Spencer Hawkins. “You need to make sure that everybody is on the same page, literally, with what you’re going to do if there’s a tornado, know where your sheltering place and location is.”

We’re still in hurricane season, and with possible storms, like Florence in the Atlantic, you never know what could happen.

Hawkins suggests having an emergency kit ready to go.

“You want to have enough water, have at least three gallons of water per person, per day for each person and then enough food, non-perishable food, for everybody to have something to eat,” said Hawkins.

He also recommends to ditch the candles, and use flashlights and glow sticks instead.

“We discourage the use of candles or matches just adding an open flame to a location can be dangerous,” said Hawkins.

A first aid kit and a weather radio should also be included.

“Staying informed is I think one of the more critical pieces of what you’re trying to do in your overall disaster planning because you can’t put your plan in place, you can’t make your kit ready unless you know what’s going on,” said Hawkins.

The county is also preparing, by rounding up volunteers to help out at shelters and in other areas needed. EMA will host its first Disaster Volunteer Summit.

“We want to match your particular skill set with what you want to volunteer and if you are somebody who loves to work in amateur radio, and is a hand radio operator, we have an amateur radio emergency services team that would love to have you,” said Hakwins.

The summit will take place at the Macon-Bibb County Government Center September 29, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
