Macon-Bibb coroner seeking donations for unclaimed dead man

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says he needs someone to help bury or cremate a dead man.

Vernon Elrod died on January 14th in an Augusta hospital and a relative never claimed his body.

Jones says Elrod most recently lived in the Goodwill nursing home in Macon. Jones hasn’t been able to find Elrod’s family nor has he received burial funds from the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services.

It’s costing taxpayers $100 per day to keep Elrod in the county morgue.

If you’d like to donate to the Vernon Elrod fund, you can do so by sending a check or money order with “Burial for Vernon Elrod” to the Macon-Bibb County Coroner’s Office at 617 Mulberry St., Room 402-A, Macon, Georgia 31201.
