Local college students help give back to their community

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Virginia College students and staff members participated in a community day of service Friday afternoon.

Members were at the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank to help package boxes of food for families in need, while students from the college’s cosmetology program were at The Salvation Army giving out free haircuts.

Lisa Franklin, a representative of the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, says her organization relies heavily on volunteers.

“We actually have about 20,000 hours that were served in 2015,” she added. “That’s about the equivalency of 7-9 staff members so that’s extremely a great savings for us.”

The event is part of a nationwide campaign for the company, which sees more than 5,300 people volunteer in order to help give back to their communities.
