Local Church’s ‘Backpack Buddies’ Initiative Helps Under-served Families

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)-Forest Hill Methodist Church is impacting under-served families in the community in a big way.

Now with the help of Macon’s Junior League, students qualifying for free and reduced lunch can also count on donated meals over the holiday break.

The ‘Backpack Buddies’ initiative has been helping children across Macon for the past 5 years. Volunteers pack and deliver meals to students school faculty members believe may not have access to regular meals on weekends and breaks.

“We just wanna help parents get the resources that they need to provide their children,” said Lane Elementary School Counselor Roselle Holcombe.

Since its start at Lane Elementary, ‘Backpack Buddies’ has expanded from serving nine to more than 1200 students in the area.

Junior League members were just one of many groups that volunteered. They assisted in packing and delivering hundreds of bags to students at several schools across the county.
The goal according to Junior League president, Jessica Johnson, is to help make sure hunger isn’t a reason students are distracted in or outside of school.

If  you’re interested in donating to the cause, you can drop off easy-to-open dry items to Forest Hill Methodist Church at 1217 Forest Hill Rd Macon, Ga 31210.
