Local church holds memorial service for murdered Putnam County couple

GREENSBORO, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Lake Oconee Community Church finally held a memorial service for Russell and Shirley Dermond, a Putnam County couple who was murdered last year.

Reverend David Key said it was postponed because of the on-going investigation. Once church members realized it’s possible the case could remain unsolved, they decided to hold the service on the one year anniversary of their murder.

Friends remembered Shirley’s excellent bridge playing skills and Russell’s one of a kind sense of humor.

“The reality is we may have to live with this for the rest of our lives, just never having a true answer as to why this occurred to Russ and Shirley and, so, trying to help people realize that’s just part of life,” explained Reverend Key.

The couple was murdered at their Great Waters Reynolds Plantation home last May. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office still hasn’t made an arrest in the case. 41NBC will take a deeper look into the unsolved murder on Wednesday. “The Lake Oconee Murders: One Year Later” special report will air on the news at 6:00 p.m.
