List: Middle Georgia school closures for Tuesday, January 9 due to severe weather threat

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Several Middle Georgia schools and districts have announced they will be closed on Tuesday, January 9 due to the threat of inclement weather. Here’s a list of closures and other changes that will be updated as we receive additional information. Check back for updates.

Academy for Classical Education (ACE) – “WEATHER ALERT – SCHOOL CLOSING. Based on the increase in wind speeds and possible bad weather in the morning hours we will NOT have school at ACE tomorrow. ACE will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9th, due to weather.”

Baldwin County Schools  – “Upon consultation with state and local officials regarding forecasted weather models and the expected impact of high winds on school buses, the Baldwin County School District has decided to have an asynchronous virtual learning day tomorrow, January 9th. All after-school activities are canceled. The school district will communicate any changes regarding athletic events and the scheduled School Board Meeting by noon tomorrow. School operations are expected to resume as normal on Wednesday, January 10th. Please monitor the Baldwin County School District social media sites and Infinite Campus for further developments and updates. Stay safe.”

Bibb County Schools – “Due to the possibility for severe weather and our concern for the safety and welfare of our staff and students, the Bibb County School District will be asynchronous on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. All athletics events for Tuesday, January 9, have been canceled. This decision has been made following weather briefings with the US National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia and Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency. We expect all students to engage in continued learning, no matter their location. Updates about student assignments will be shared by each child’s school through Remind, Canvas, and social media. BCSD employees will work remotely; some Operations and School Team members will be asked to follow crisis and severe weather protocols to ensure all facilities are safe and secure. All employees should follow directions from supervisors for the day’s work, and please communicate with your supervisor about any issues that may prevent you from working (power outage, etc.). We appreciate you and urge you to be safe!”

Central Fellowship Christian Academy (CFCA) – “CFCA Families, following the decision by Bibb County, we will be closed on Tuesday, January 9.”

Covenant Academy – “Covenant Academy will be closed tomorrow. Scheduled athletic events will be determined and communicated tomorrow.

Cirrus Academy Charter School – “Good evening Eagle Country. From the Desk of our CEO/Superintendent, there is a threat of the potential severe weather in the Macon-Bibb county area on Tuesday, January 9,2024. A line of strong to severe storms are expected to move in the area beginning as early as 6am. The CACS Superintendent, Dr. Gail Fowler is coordinating with Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency, and the National Weather Service to monitor alerts and conditions. As the safety of our Staff & Scholars are our first priority and due to the inclement weather expected in the area, Cirrus Academy will be placed on asynchronous learning for all staff and scholars, Tuesday, January 9,2024.”

Crisp Academy – “SCHOOL CLOSED on Tuesday, January 9th due to the weather. We will see you on Wednesday, January 10th.” “Basketball games for Tuesday have also been canceled. Stay safe!”

Crisp County Schools – “Due to the expected impact from tomorrow’s severe weather, Crisp County Schools will be closed Tuesday, January 9, 2024. We will continue to monitor roadway safety for next steps. Safety will continue to be our priority. Thank you and be safe.”

Dodge County Schools – “After correspondence with the National Weather Service, Dodge County Schools will be closed January 9th for staff and students due to the potential of strong winds of up to 40 mph and severe storms.” “Because of the possible threat of bad weather tomorrow, 1/9, our basketball games against Cook County have been cancelled.”

Dooly County Schools – “Dear Dooly County School System Families and Staff, due to the potential for severe weather tomorrow and out of an abundance caution, Dooly County School System will have an inclement weather day on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Students, faculty, and staff will not report to the schools. All after-school activities are canceled for tomorrow. Please follow the guidance issued in weather reports and stay safe. Thank you, and please be safe.”

First Presbyterian Day School (FPD) – “Due to the potential for severe weather and possible power outages, school will be closed for Tuesday, January 9, 2024. All assessments/homework scheduled or assigned for Tuesday will be pushed/due on Wednesday. Wednesday, January 10, will remain as a late start day with school beginning at 8:50 am. All athletic events, practices, and extra-curricular activities are cancelled for Tuesday, January 9. Athletic games will be rescheduled.”

Georgia College & State University – “GCSU will have a delayed opening Tuesday morning, January 9, with normal operations resuming at noon Tuesday. All classes and campus events that begin before noon are cancelled. Read the full announcement: https://bit.ly/3NWszNx. The safety of our students, faculty and staff remains the highest priority as we track the storms. Any further delays or cancellations will be made after an 8 a.m. weather briefing Tuesday morning. Dining services at The Max will continue as normal. A limited breakfast menu will be delivered to the Pizza Hut area in the West Campus Center and served from 8 to 11 a.m. for West Campus residents. Shuttle service will not run until normal operations resume. Students should check the Passio GO app for the most up to date information. Essential personnel should report to campus as the weather allows and make a prudent judgement as to travel. In the event of emergency circumstances requiring immediate action, a GC Alert will be issued. Updates will be posted to the GCSU website and official social media accounts.”

Hancock County Schools – “Important announcement: All schools and the Central Office are closed. Students will not attend school on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. We will resume school as normal on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Stay tuned for updates, and stay safe.”

Jasper County Charter System – “Due to the forecasted severe weather event for Jasper County and the surrounding area tomorrow, the Jasper County Charter System will be closed on January 9, 2024, for all students and staff. This includes all afterschool events as well. The Jasper County Board of Education work session scheduled for January 9, 2024, is also canceled. According to the National Weather Service, the Jasper County area will be at risk for significant severe weather with damaging winds/ tornadoes, possible flooding due to heavy rainfall, and strong winds. March 11th will now be a regular instructional day for students. Thank you for your understanding.”

John Hancock Academy – “School is closed tomorrow due to threat of inclement weather. Finals begin Wednesday as scheduled.”

John Milledge Academy – “Due to the predicted severe weather, we will NOT be having school tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 9th). Stay safe, Trojan Family!”

Johnson County Schools – “***Virtual Learning – Tomorrow January 9, 2024*** We have had updates from our local EMA leaders and the National Weather Service during a state webinar today. Due to forecasted weather conditions and the threat of high winds and rain, Johnson County Schools will have a Virtual Learning Day tomorrow, Tuesday January 9. All staff and students will participate virtually at home using Google Classroom. There will be no after school activities on campus tomorrow.”

Jones County Schools – “Jones County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 9th due to severe weather threats. Students and staff should report to school on Wednesday.”

Lamar County Schools“Out of an abundance of caution, all Lamar County schools will be closed to staff and students Tuesday, January 9, 2024 due to impending weather conditions. We will resume normal hours and activities Wednesday, January 10. Stay safe. “

Macon County Schools – “Due to pending inclement weather, MCSS will be closed for on-campus learning on January 9, 2024. MCHS and MCMS will log into Teams for virtual-learning assignments. MCES will receive learning packets before dismissal today. Please check bookbags for these assignments. Students will return to school on Wednesday, January 10.”

Monroe County Schools  – “Monroe County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 9, due to the threat of severe weather. Staff and students will return on Wednesday, January 10.

Piedmont Academy –  “Piedmont families, due to the high chance of inclement weather, Piedmont Academy will be closed on Tuesday, January 9th. Any changes to the home basketball game, schedule for tomorrow, will be determined around noon tomorrow. Check your email for updates. Everyone, please stay safe.”

Putnam County Charter School System – “Out of an abundance of caution for our student’s safety, all PCCSS Schools will be CLOSED tomorrow, Tuesday January 9th, 2024. PCCSS faculty and staff should report to their respective schools by 9am. We will continue to monitor the weather and make any additional updates as needed. Thank you and stay safe!”

Stratford Academy – “Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has issued a severe weather warning for Middle Georgia for Tuesday, January 9. With anticipated high winds and flooding, Stratford Academy will be closed.”

Taylor County Schools – As of 12 a.m. on 1/9, the district has not made an announcement about school closing, but did provide this update on Facebook: “Basketball game for tomorrow, 1/09, has been moved to Friday, 1/12, at 6 PM.”

Telfair County Schools – “The National Weather Service is predicting severe thunderstorms with high winds and possible heavy rainfall in our area tomorrow. The storms are likely to include wind gusts that would make it unsafe to operate our buses. Based on this weather forecast, school will be closed for Telfair County students and staff on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. We plan to resume normal operations on Wednesday, January 10. Thomaston-Upson Schools – “All schools and offices within the Thomaston-Upson School System will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9. After considering the risks of severe rain, sustained high winds with gusts above 40 mph, and the possibility of tornadoes, we have determined that school closure is the best solution to ensure that our students and staff remain safe. We will resume normal school hours on Wednesday, January 10. (This information went out in a phone call and text to parents and staff via our automated call system. If you did not receive notification, please check your settings in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal to ensure you have the correct phone number entered there and that you have opted in for messages. If you have not set up your parent Infinite Campus account, then please contact your child’s school or visit the Parent Section on our district website for directions on how to do this.) Stay safe, and we’ll see everyone back at school on Wednesday!”

Treutlen County Schools – “In cooperation with our regional and state emergency partners, we have determined the weather forecast for tomorrow has worsened and may pose a risk. The sustained winds are forecasted to be over 40 mph for periods of time, and school buses should not be on the roadway with sustained winds at this level. Therefore, to ensure the safety of our staff, students, and families, school will be closed for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9, 2024. We plan for school to resume as normal on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Once again, the safety of our students, staff, and our families is paramount to us.”

Trinity Christian School (Dublin) – “Due to inclement weather there will be no school or school related activities tomorrow. Please check your email for more information.”

Twiggs Academy – “Due to the anticipated bad weather, tomorrow will be an asynchronous/work-at-home day. Work is being sent home to be completed. Thank you for your support!”

Twiggs County Schools – “⛈️ Breaking News ⛈️! Twiggs County Public Schools will move to an Asynchronous Learning Day on 1/9/2024 due to the potential for severe weather conditions. All students and staff will work virtually.”

Washington County Schools – “January 8, 2024 – Dear Parents & Guardians, we have been closely monitoring the weather system that is being forecasted to impact our area beginning later this evening and throughout the day tomorrow. After receiving the latest update from our local EMA and the National Weather Service, we will shift to virtual learning tomorrow (January 9, 2024). Students and staff will not report to the schools. All athletic events, extra-curricular, and after-school activities will be cancelled due to the unpredictability of this system. We want to ensure that our students and staff remain safe during this projected inclement weather. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding. If you have questions or need clarification, please reach out to your schools or email info@wacoschools.org. Please check the district website (washingtoncountyschoolsga.org), Facebook, and/or Parent Square for updates regarding school operations for Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Wheeler County Schools – “After consulting with our local EMA Director and viewing forecasts for tomorrow, Wheeler County School administrators have made the decision to cancel school for Tuesday, January 9th for all staff and students. Heavy wind gusts and torrential rain create hazardous driving conditions for our buses, and we want to ensure the safety of all students and staff. We plan to return to school on Wednesday, January 10th and pray everyone will remain safe.”

Wilcox County Schools – “IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: After consulting with weather officials and neighboring districts, we will be closing school for all students and staff tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Winds are supposed to be sustained over 35 mph which is a hazard for the buses. We plan to resume normal school operations on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Thank you for your cooperation. Be Safe!”

Wilkinson County Schools – “Wilkinson County Schools will have a virtual learning day on Tuesday, January 9, due to projected inclement weather in the area. District administrators will keep a close eye on the weather and related developments and provide updates on social media, the district website, and the One Call system. Please stay safe as the storm passes through the area. It’s essential to note that staff will be working from home on Wednesday, January 9th. As of now, the plan is to resume school on Wednesday morning, January 10.”
