(NBC)- Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold appeared in a Tampa courtroom Wednesday after surrendering to authorities on serious felony charges.
Prosecutors accuse Arnold of helping plan an attack on three teenagers, including two he believed had stolen from him earlier this year, despite investigators previously clearing them of any wrongdoing.
According to investigators, the victims were beaten, held at gunpoint and pistol-whipped before their personal belongings were taken. Authorities also allege one of the attackers livestreamed the assault to Arnold and others.
Investigators say they uncovered a group chat in which Arnold and another defendant allegedly gave directions during the attack.
Six people have been arrested in connection with the case, and two have already pleaded guilty.
Just days before turning himself in, Arnold declined to discuss the allegations publicly, saying he wanted to focus on football.
In a statement to NBC News, Arnold’s representative said the NFL player maintains his innocence and argued prosecutors are relying on testimony from people who may have incentives to shift blame.
Arnold is charged with kidnapping and armed robbery. Prosecutors say he will remain in custody until at least a pretrial detention hearing scheduled for Monday.
