LaTasha R. Butts Memorial Highway dedicated in Milledgeville

The highway naming honors the late Baldwin County native’s legacy in athletics and breast cancer advocacy.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Local and state leaders gathered last week to officially dedicate the LaTasha R. Butts Memorial Highway at the intersection of Highway 49 and the 441 Milledgeville Bypass, according to a news release from the Baldwin County School District.

The event honored the legacy of LaTasha R. Butts, a Milledgeville native and Baldwin County School District Distinguished Alumni, known for her career in collegiate athletics and her advocacy in the fight against breast cancer. She died in October 2023.

The Honorable Floyd Griffin presided over the ceremony and reflected on Butts’ life and the pride Baldwin County continues to hold in her achievements. Representative Mack Jackson also attended the ceremony, which marked the formal installation of highway signage following the bill’s passage and signing into law by the 2025 Georgia General Assembly, the release said.

“LaTasha R. Butts was known not only for her career in collegiate athletics but also for her courage and advocacy in the fight against breast cancer,” the district said in the release. “Her strength, leadership, and resilience left an enduring mark on all who knew her. The highway naming stands as a permanent tribute to her legacy and serves as a source of inspiration for future generations.”
