Lane Students Plant Veggies and Herbs For Salads

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Some McKibben Lane Elementary students learned what they eat, comes from the ground.

Representatives from Bibb County’s school Nutrition Department and the USDA helped the children plant six new gardens.

The children planted romaine, and arugula lettuce along with broccoli and spinach in their new vegetable gardens. They also planted a variety of herb gardens.

Officials say students planting gardens, helps to teach them about healthy eating habits.

Cesar Carranza is in the fifth grade at the school. He talked about planting his favorite vegetable.

“Lettuce, because, it’s healthy for you and everybody puts it in their salad,” says Carranza.

Theresa Cantrel is a Bibb County Board of Education Nutrition Site Manager. She taught the children how to plant the veggies and herbs in above ground garden beds.

“We believe that eating healthy is good for the students,” says Cantrel. “Let them learn to eat salads making things that they can plant. There are a lot of children that don’t even realize lettuce grows in gardens.”

The Lane Elementary students are now responsible for nurturing their gardens. When the vegetables and herbs are ready to be harvested, the students will pick them and make salads from the vegetables and herbs they have grown.
