Jury selection underway in bribery case involving former Bibb Co. leaders
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Jury selection in the case against former Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority Chairman/Director and a Tallahassee attorney began Monday morning.
Both defendants, Cliffard Whitby and Harold Knowles were in federal court when just jury selection started at 9 AM. Judge Marc Treadwell asked more than 100 potential jurors questions to see if they had any knowledge of the case and/or if they knew any of the potential witnesses. Among the list of witnesses are former Bibb County School District (BCSD) superintendent, Romain Dallemand, BCSD board member Wanda West, Loretta Thomas, Rev. David Stanley, Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert and Whitby’s wife.
An indictment claims Whitby agreed to pay Dallemand $100,000 a year to support Macon Promise Neighborhood (MPN), a program aimed to improve life and education in impoverished neighborhoods. The deal was Bibb County Schools would give MPN $1 million a year and Dallemand would receive 10%.
Harold Knowles, also indicted, is accused of being the middle man and giving many of Whitby’s payments to Dallemand.
