Jewish holiday of Purim begins Thursday night

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Thursday night marks the first night of the Jewish holiday of Purim.

Purim commemorates the events that happened in the Book of Esther.

Temple Beth Israel President Betty Taylor compares Purim to Mardi Gras, Passover, and Halloween — all rolled into one.

Usually, Temple Beth Israel hosts a Purim carnival open to the public. However, this year they are limiting access due to COVID.

Taylor says though they have closed the carnival to the public, you can safely celebrate the holiday at home.

“Just celebrate and have joy, dance, read the Book of Esther and just enjoy the time,” said Taylor.

How to celebrate Purim

• Dress up in costumes
• Make Hamantaschen (a triangle-shaped cookie filled with jam or chocolate)
• Put together a food package to give to your neighbor or someone in need

RSVPs are closed for the carnival this year. Taylor says they hope to resume the public carnival next year.
