WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An inmate charged in the murder of former Fort Valley State coach Sammy Jackson is now facing new felony charges after deputies say he attacked a jailer inside the Houston County Detention Center.

According to an April 18 news release from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, sent after a 41NBC inquiry, it happened late Sunday night. Just before 11:15 p.m., a detention deputy was performing nightly duties when inmate Iquane Brown claimed his toilet was leaking. The sheriff’s office says the deputy stepped into the cell to check and that Brown reached around the deputy’s neck from behind, choked him and said he would kill him.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy fought back and pulled Brown’s arm off his neck. Brown then tried to grab the deputy’s Taser but couldn’t remove it from the holster. As the deputy called for help over the radio, Brown bit him on the cheek and tried to choke him again, the release said. Brown also tried to gouge the deputy’s eyes before backup arrived. Other deputies restrained Brown and placed him in handcuffs.

Both Brown and the deputy were evaluated by medical staff and cleared. The deputy, who the sheriff’s office has not identified, was treated at the emergency room and has since returned to duty.

The sheriff’s office said Brown is now facing additional felony charges. According to online jail records, four arrest warrants were added to his record on April 15:

  • Aggravated assault

  • Riot in a penal institution

  • Terroristic threats and acts

  • Obstruction of officers

Brown was already being held without bond on multiple charges, including murder in the January killing of Jackson, who was also an educator in the Bibb County School District. Brown is also charged with armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, kidnapping, and multiple firearm violations in that case, according to Atlanta Police.
