iPads Encourage Learning for Houston County Students
Some eighth graders at Perry Middle School are trading in their textbooks for touch-screen tablets.
Jeff Carroll, a science teacher at Perry Middle School is hoping a year long pilot using iPads will enhance learning for his students.
“They’re used to using their hands all the time to find information, the iPad allows them to do that, they’ve got something they can hold on to,” says Carroll.
Carroll says he isn’t surprised at how well his students have embraced the new technology.
“It’s new technology so it’s going to get people like ‘oh I want to use that,’ I want to use this,” says student Malik Golden.
Students agree they like the onscreen keyboard and multiple applications because it’s similar to using a cell phone.
“It’s just more hands-on activity, instead of using a textbook where we flip through pages, it’s a lot more fun,” says student MaciAnne Wilson.
Carroll believes the applications will increase learning and instruction.
Nearly a hundred kids will be a part of the pilot-program over the next year.
