Investigators search for second suspect in murder of Mercer basketball player

UPDATE: Bibb County Sheriff’s Investigators and the U.S. Marshals Southeastern Regional Fugitive Task Force have arrested 33-year-old Damion Deray Henderson, just before 6:30PM this evening at an apartment complex in Decatur, Georgia.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  The Mercer Men’s Basketball coach is thanking the community for its support after one of his players, Jibri Bryan, was killed Tuesday.

The 23-year-old was shot outside a downtown gas station some students said they go to all the time. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office arrested one man for killing Jibri Bryan. Investigators have a warrant out for the arrest of another suspect, but they won’t release the name because they’re afraid he or she will try to run away.

After Wednesday night’s vigil, Coach Bob Hoffman is thanking the community for supporting the bears during this difficult time. Hoffman tweeted “the outpouring kindness of people who have offered help has been overwhelming and I cannot thank everyone enough.” Bryan was the father of a little boy.

Investigators from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office believe two people shot at Jibri Bryan.

“There’s no indication that Mr. Bryan had a weapon or fired a weapon,” said Lt. Randy Gonzalez from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Jarvis Miller is charged with felony murder. He’s at the hospital because he was shot in the chest.

“He’s going to be in there for a few more days. We just have to wait for the doctors at the hospital to release him,” explained Lt. Gonzalez.

Deputies also found a bottle and money lying outside the car Bryan was using.

“We’re going to say it’s a suspicious substance right now because we don’t know what’s in it. We don’t know what it is, but it has been sent off to the lab to be analyzed,” said Lt. Gonzalez.

Students at Mercer University are mourning the loss of a fellow bear. Bryan had just started his last semester of grad school and was recently names a finalist for the All-State Good Works Team.
