Spring Street I16 W Ramp

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A newly constructed westbound I-16 on-ramp at Spring Street is set to open overnight Tuesday as part of the ongoing I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon.

According to a Georgia Department of Transportation news release, the traffic shift will begin at 9 p.m. and is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Wednesday, weather and on-site conditions permitting.

Under the new configuration, drivers traveling northbound on Spring Street and accessing westbound I-16 will be directed into a newly constructed roadway and ramp located in the far-right lane. GDOT says the existing left-turn movement from Spring Street onto I-16 westbound will no longer be used once the switch is complete.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signage and allow extra time when traveling through the area overnight.

The change is part of the $620 million I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project, a multi-phase effort to widen and reconstruct I-16, I-75 and their interchange in Macon-Bibb. The project, scheduled to continue through 2030, is intended to improve safety and traffic flow for local commuters, regional travelers and commercial freight moving through Middle Georgia.
