Houston County Sharks beat Henry County, claims eighth straight state wheelchair basketball title
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One thing you can’t strip away is the heart of a champion.
The Houston County Sharks varsity wheelchair basketball team proved that in their 23-22 overtime win over the Henry County Hurricanes Friday at the Macon Centreplex.
The Sharks trailed 17-6 at the half, but never hung their heads. They picked up their defensive intensity in the fourth period, holding Henry County scoreless.
The Sharks kept fighting until they trailed 17-11 heading into the final two periods.
In the sixth period, Jaquavious West knocked down a game-tying shot with a little over 30 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Henry County led 22-21 with just under 20 seconds left in overtime. But then, Dylan Thomas would put the Sharks ahead for good with a wide-open bank shot under the basket, and the Sharks went on to capture their eighth straight state wheelchair basketball championship.
Head coach Christy Jones said she couldn’t be more proud.
“We have awesome seniors. Both coaches have been battling breast cancer. We don’t feel like we’ve given them 100 percent, and for them to come out, work so hard and to come back and do this game like they just did. It makes me feel good. I’m so proud of them.”
