PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Houston County Board of Education has selected Dr. Richard Rogers as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools, with a final vote scheduled for November 12.

Dr. Rogers, currently the district’s Deputy Superintendent, was chosen after an extensive selection process that included feedback from parents, school staff, and community members, according to a district news release.

“When the Houston County Board of Education began the process of searching for the next superintendent, we were looking for someone who could build on the strong reputation of our District and who would continue moving Houston County forward,” Houston County Board of Education Chair Helen Hughes said. “Our board unanimously agreed that Dr. Rogers was the right person to lead the Houston County School District.”

Dr. Rogers has been with the Houston County School District since 2004, holding multiple leadership and teaching roles. He previously served as the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations and Director of Personnel. His teaching career includes stints at Bert Rumble and Huntington Middle Schools. Rogers was also assistant principal at Quail Run Elementary School and principal at Matt Arthur Elementary School.

He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education in Middle Grades Education from the University of West Georgia. He later earned a specialist degree from Columbus State University and a doctorate in Leadership from Valdosta State University.

The upcoming vote follows the planned retirement of current superintendent Dr. Mark Scott, who will retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. If approved, Dr. Rogers will take over the role starting June 2, 2025.
