Houston County proposes school attendance zone changes
The proposed changes would impact several elementary and middle schools beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.
HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Houston County School District is proposing changes to attendance zones for several elementary and middle schools beginning with the 2027-2028 school year.
The largest changes involve Bonaire Middle School and Perry Middle School, as the district prepares for the opening of Veterans Middle School in August 2027.
Based on current enrollment, the district estimates about 555 students from Bonaire Middle School would be rezoned to Veterans Middle School, while about 205 students from Perry Middle School would also be rezoned to Veterans Middle School.
The district says those numbers are estimates and could change.
The district’s proposal also includes about 125 students from Centerville Elementary School moving to Eagle Springs Elementary School, about 15 students from Kings Chapel Elementary School moving to Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary Schools, and about 25 students from Tucker Elementary School moving to Langston Road Primary and Elementary Schools.
The district says residential growth is one reason for the proposed changes. Houston County Schools Deputy Superintendent Chris Brown says about 1,000 homes are expected to be built in the Centerville Elementary attendance zone over the next few years.
Other proposed middle school changes include about 35 students from Huntington Middle School moving to Bonaire Middle School and about 35 students from Perry Middle School moving to Mossy Creek Middle School.
The district says the proposal is also intended to create more consistent feeder patterns as students move from elementary to middle and high school.
High schools will not be affected by the proposed changes.
Families currently enrolled at a school affected by the proposed changes can choose to keep their children at their current school through the highest grade offered.
However, families who choose that option would be responsible for providing transportation.
Students who attend the school assigned to their residence under the new attendance zones would receive district transportation.
The district will hold four community meetings to give parents an opportunity to review the proposed maps and provide feedback.
The meeting for families affected by the Perry Middle School changes will be Monday, September 21 at 6 p.m. at the Perry Middle School cafeteria.
The meeting for families affected by the Bonaire Middle School and Huntington Middle School changes will be Tuesday, September 22 at 6 p.m. at the Veterans High School auditorium.
The meeting for families affected by the Centerville Elementary School changes will be Tuesday, September 29 at 6 p.m. at the Eagle Springs Elementary School cafeteria.
The meeting for families affected by the Kings Chapel Elementary School and Tucker Elementary School changes will be Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m. at the Perry High School auditorium.
The district says parents will be able to see the proposed maps, ask questions and provide input as the proposal is finalized.
The Houston County Board of Education is expected to vote on the proposed attendance zone changes during its October 6 meeting at 1 p.m. at the district’s central office in Perry.
