The Houston County Board of Education announced Dr. Richard Rogers as the next Superintendent of Schools during their meeting on Tuesday.

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)— The Houston County Board of Education announced Dr. Richard Rogers as the next Superintendent of Schools during their meeting on Tuesday.
Rogers, who currently serves as the Deputy Superintendent for the district, will take over the role on June 2, 2025, following the retirement of Dr. Mark Scott.
“I am grateful to the Board of Education for their trust and faith in me to continue moving our District forward,” Dr. Rogers said. “It is an immense honor to lead and support our teachers, staff, students, and families. I’m committed to building on the outstanding foundation, community partnerships, and the many relationships we already have in place. Our students and staff truly make our District an incredible place to work each day, and I’m excited to see what all we can achieve together.”
Dr. Rogers was named the sole finalist for the Superintendent position in October. He has been with the Houston County School District since 2004, holding various roles such as Assistant Superintendent of School Operations, Director of Personnel, and Principal of Matt Arthur Elementary School.
He has served as Deputy Superintendent since 2021.
“The task of hiring the next Superintendent of Schools was not a responsibility that our Board of Education members took lightly,” Houston County Board of Education chair Helen Hughes said. “Dr. Scott leaves a strong legacy of leadership, organizational stewardship, and support of learning in our classrooms. We are confident that Dr. Rogers will continue to lead the District in ways that enhance learning for our students, encourage our teachers, and collaborate with staff to ensure high achievement for all.”
Dr. Rogers earned a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education and a Master of Education from the University of West Georgia. He later received a specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Columbus State University and a doctorate in Leadership from Valdosta State University.
“Making the decision to retire from a District I have loved working for over the past 17 years was not an easy one,” outgoing Superintendent Dr. Mark Scott said. “The teachers, staff, and students I have interacted with over the years have left lasting memories that will stay with me for many years to come. Dr. Rogers has been an integral part of helping make our District strong, and I know he will continue to lead the District well.”
Dr. Scott will continue in his role until the end of the 2024-2025 school year.
