Heavy Smoke Settles in the Macon-Bibb County Area

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A permit issued by the Georgia Forestry Commission to a property owner in Jones County has caused a cloud of heavy smoke to settle in and around Macon.

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department fielded several phone calls reporting on the appearance of the smoke cloud, causing an investigation.

The permit given calls for a 400 acre agricultural burn located on Upper River Road in Jones County.

Due to shifting winds, the smoke from the burn was able to reach the Macon-Bibb area, but officials say there is no immediate threat to property. Conditions will likely persist for the next 24-48 hours.

The Fire Department will continue to keep an eye on the situation, and will issue further updates if necessary.
