Healthcare Insurance Premiums Increase

Several Southern states including the state of Georgia have faced some of the nation’s biggest increases in health insurance.

The Commonwealth Fund reported insurance premiums for families in Georgia increased 48 percent from 2003 to 2009.

Heart of Georgia Insurance President Patricia Brown believes increased medical premiums are caused in part by medical inflation. Brown says, “Rising pharmaceutical costs with no generics available, increased technology, increased testing and legislative mandates are the reasons behind increased premiums.”

Brown believes additional burdens for employers and employees will be the result if the health care reform is not repealed by Congress.
