PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  The Houston County Fire Department says one of its trucks was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening while en route to the scene of a crash that left at least one person dead on I-75.

According to a Houston County Fire Department news release, Engine 61 was responding with its emergency lights and siren activated when it crashed near the intersection of Main Street and Carroll Street.

“Based on statements from the driver and passenger of Engine 61, along with tire marks found at the scene, it appears that after crossing the railroad tracks on Main Street the rear of the fire truck began to bounce,” the release stated. “Brakes were applied and the rear tires locked causing the vehicle to enter a skid. The driver was able to steer the vehicle clear of others on the road avoiding additional damage and injuries.”

Momentum eventually caused the truck to “lay over” onto its side, the release added.

Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat belts and were able to exit under their own power. Both were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The fire department thanked Perry Police and Perry Fire personnel “for their professional and caring response in our time of need.”
