Hawkinsville applies for restoration grant, hopes to create city murals

HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Hawkinsville Chamber of Commerce hopes the Georgia Department of Economic Development Tourism Division selects the city for a project improvement grant.

Executive Director of the chamber Donna Rickerson, plans to use the grant to restore a historic mural, and create three others.

“There’s upwards of 100 people who may be applying. They [Georgia Department of Economic Development] may award around 10,” Rickerson says, “We are in some stiff competition for sure.”

The development grant awards $5,000-$15,000.

Archway Professional with the University of Georgia in Pulaski County Michelle Elliot, has already reached out to business owners with stores that she feels would be the best locations to add murals.

“The murals are going to be the gem that we really get to show off once we get everything looking the way we want it to look.”

She adds the project idea was in partnership with the Arts Council and the Tourism Department.

Rickerson wants to see more people occupy the historic district. Elliot agrees.

“I think projects like the mural project really demonstrate that this is a community and not just a bunch of people that live in the same place and that’s going to be very attractive to young families in the future.”

The Georgia Department of Economic Development will award the winners of the grant in September.
