Life-sentenced inmate dies after ‘altercation’ at Hancock State Prison

Officials say inmate Andre Weems died after a Tuesday altercation and the case is under investigation.

SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed the death of an inmate at Hancock State Prison following an “altercation with multiple offenders” on Tuesday.

According to a spokesperson, inmate Andre Weems died. The body was turned over to the county coroner and will be sent to the GBI crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

“The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards, as standard procedure; however, additional details are not available, as the investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.

Weems was serving a life sentence with parole for murder out of Clayton County.
