GDC confirms inmate death after ‘altercation’ at Hancock State Prison
The Georgia Department of Corrections says the inmate’s death is under investigation by its Office of Professional Standards.

HANCOCK COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — An inmate at Hancock State Prison died after an “altercation” with another inmate, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
In response to an email inquiry, a GDC spokesperson told 41NBC that Steven Wood, an inmate at Hancock State Prison, died on Sunday, January 25. His body was turned over to the county coroner and will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab to determine the official cause of death.
GDC ays the death is being investigated by the GDC Office of Professional Standards, which is standard procedure. No additional details have been released.
According to GDC, Wood was serving life with the possibility of parole for a murder conviction out of Cherokee County.
