SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Hancock County Schools is adding new security measures after a student was found with a weapon on campus, according to a district news release.
According to a school district Facebook post, a student was found to be in possession of a weapon on Tuesday afternoon. The district said school resource officers and staff responded immediately, ensuring the safety of students and staff.
“While there was no threat to students or staff, we believe in full transparency and want to keep our community informed about the steps we are taking to enhance security,” the district stated.
Starting Wednesday, March 5, students will be required to pass through metal detectors and undergo safety checks each morning for the rest of the school year.
“To ensure a smooth and efficient process, students will enter through designated entry points at the side of the school and the back of the gym,” the release stated.
The district’s text announcement specified the elementary school, but an image of the press release referred to “all students.” 41NBC has reached out to the district for clarification on policies.
“Please know that these measures are being implemented strictly as a precaution to reinforce our ongoing commitment to school safety,” the release stated.
