Habitat for Humanity builds two homes in Macon’s Napier Heights neighborhood

Two families are helping build their future homes as Habitat for Humanity continues its work in Macon’s Napier Heights neighborhood.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two families in Macon are getting closer to having a place to call home as Habitat for Humanity builds two new houses on Duncan Avenue in the Napier Heights neighborhood.

The homes are being built as part of Habitat for Humanity’s continued work in the neighborhood. Future homeowners are involved in the construction process, working alongside volunteers to help build the homes they will eventually own.

New homeowner Consuela Sandifer says she is honored to be part of the process.

“I’m honored to put the nails in, come over, lay the siding and do those types of things,” Sandifer said.

Habitat for Humanity says it has built seven homes in Napier Heights since 2022, with plans to build 10 more over the next year.

Congressman Sanford Bishop visited the construction site Wednesday to see the organization’s affordable housing efforts. Bishop says he has supported Habitat for Humanity for many years and has worked to help provide federal funding for the organization.

“We have in the FY27 appropriations bill funding for 10 more homes in this community, the Napier Heights neighborhood,” Bishop said. “We are excited about that. We’re excited about what’s going on here. We’re excited about the opportunities that will be created by having this affordable housing here in this community.”

The funding has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate.

Bishop says he is glad to see two more families getting homes, while also pointing to the rising cost of housing and other everyday expenses.

“We’ve got to reduce costs, costs at the grocery store, cost of the gas pump, cost for mortgages and rent,” Bishop said. “We’ve got to work hard to bring those costs down so that life is affordable once again.”
