Group of Macon’s Young Leaders Aiming to End Racial Divide
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A group of young leaders in Macon wants to do something about the racial divide they say exists in the community.
Just days after the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial was announced, the local group, known as #MPact, gathered people of all races Thursday at the Grand Opera House in Macon.
Several dozen showed up to offer ideas on how to move Macon forward in the fight against racism iin the future.
A panel answered questions on topics like race relations, the judicial process and youth empowerment.
“We want to make sure that the youth and young business people, such as ourselves, realize that they can make a difference and they can have a voice,” says one of the group’s founding members, Molly Wilkins. “I think this is a perfect example, because none of us are elected officials, we don’t hold public office, we’re not running for office, and we’re coming together and doing this.”
#MPACT members say they were humbled at Thursday’s attendance, because the group just started up on Monday.
They don’t plan to stop with Thursday’s forum, either. Wilkins says right now, the plan is to hold the open meetings quarterly.
