Grant awarded to Otis Redding Center for Creative Arts

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Otis Redding Foundation received a $15,000 grant Thursday afternoon.

The grant was awarded by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, and will be used to refurbish the Otis Redding Center for Creative Arts.

The center, which opened last October, is located at 333 Cotton Avenue in downtown Macon.

“We’re so excited to expand the center here,” said Karla Redding-Andrews, the daughter of the late musician Otis Redding. “Create sound spaces, buy additional equipment that we need in order to make this center usable for more students other than just one at a time.”

The center is aimed at young men and women between the ages of 8 and 17, and can be visited during after school hours and on weekends.

Redding-Andrews believes that an accessible place where people can learn music can be an important part of the community, especially for those who don’t usually get opportunities for such an education.

“We created the Otis Redding Center for Creative Arts where they can come and do music lessons, voice lessons, strings, drums, guitaring… all of those things that they can get on a daily basis.”

With renovations coming thanks to the grant, the center hopes to possibly begin offering lessons for adults, as well.
