Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Kicks Off “Season for Safety” Campaign

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is urging anyone traveling now, through the end of the year, to be even more alert on Georgia’s roadways.Harris Blackwood, the director of the GOHS, stopped in Macon Monday to kick off the “Season for Safety” campaign.

One of it’s goals is to keep the number of fatalities and crashes lower this year.

If the trend continues, Blackwood said Georgia is on track to have even more crashes and fatalities in 2013.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner, Colonel Mark McDonough, says there are three things drivers should keep on their mind to help curb those numbers.

“Speed, DUI, and seatbelts. Those are three things that you can control, and if you control them, you can keep your family safe, and the folks around you safe,” said McDonough.

If you’re tempted to speed, Blackwood wants you to remember slowing down can mean the difference between getting to your destination, or not getting there at all.

The holiday weekend travel period officially starts Wednesday, and runs through Sunday night.
