Girls Learn ‘MAGIC’ Inside Bibb County Classroom

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Dozens of girls in Bibb County are staying busy this summer, while learning a new skill set. Mentoring A Girl In Construction, also known as Magic, Inc., is a summer camp geared toward introducing young girls to the construction industry.

Renee Conner is the founder of Magic, Inc. and started the organization in 2007.

“My dad was an electrical contractor and he used to take me on the job site with him and I just fell in love with construction,” said Conner.

The camp offers instruction and hands on training in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, and welding.

Samencia Rogers, a 10th grader at Central High School couldn’t wait to sign up.

“I love doing things with my hands,” said Rogers.

Conner has introduced girls around the country to a new career path. Her hope is that they will also break through the ‘concrete ceiling.’

Before any construction begins, the girls are given all the tools they need including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and a tool kit.

Rogers added that she enjoys problem solving at home and working on things that need to be fixed. The camp allows her to do just that.

The girls walk away from the camp with the attitude they can do anything. Whether or not girls have better ‘fix-it’ practices than boys, the skills they gain will help them secure a brighter future.

The free, week long camp is open to rising 9th through 11th graders. There are 25 camps across the country. The one in Bibb County is being held at Southwest High School.
