Georgia law enforcement officers prepare for weekend safe driving enforcement campaign

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia State Patrol troopers and local law enforcement officers across the state will be out enforcing safe driving this weekend.

Drive Sober Georgia is an effort to get impaired drivers off the road.

Troopers will also be looking for distracted drivers, unbuckled passengers and speeders.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reports 677 fatalities on Georgia roads this year.

“Ladies and gentlemen, if we had people dying like that from disease, we would be running around with masks and gloves. We have an epidemic out today on highway crash fatalities,” said Harris Blackwood, the Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Last year during the July 4th weekend, GSP gave out 8,600 citations.

343 were for DUI.
