Georgia Southern’s new football head coach stops in middle Georgia

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia Southern’s newest football coach made a stop in middle Georgia Thursday as part of his coach’s caravan.

Dozens of alumni welcomed head coach Willie Fritz to Monroe County and they had some questions for the former Sam Houston State coach….the biggest being the state of the offense.

Southern’s known for their smash mouth running attack, and Fritz says he’d like to throw the ball a bit more, while staying with his traditional coaching roots.

“We’re going to throw the football 15,25 times a  ball game, but we’re still going to run a lot of triple option. I really believe in running the football. I’ve been a head football coach for a long time, this will be my 22nd year. When we’ve had one more yard rushing than our opponent in those 20,21 years, we’ve won 92% of our games,” Fritz said.

This a big year for Georgia Southern, the athletic department has moved up in division rank from FCS to FBS.

The eagles begin their inaugural FBS football season in August against North Carolina.
