MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Human Services says food assistance for thousands of Georgia families will end November 1 if the federal government shutdown continues.

In an update Friday, DHS said the U.S. Department of Agriculture notified the agency that there is not enough federal funding to cover November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. SNAP recipients can still use any remaining funds on their EBT cards, but according to DHS, the cards will stop working November 1 without congressional action.

Recipients are urged to plan ahead and shop for needed items now. They can check their balances through the ConnectEBT website or app.

SNAP benefits are fully federally funded and distributed to eligible households by the state. DHS reminded families not to submit duplicate applications, as it will not affect benefit timing or eligibility.

“We understand how important SNAP benefits are to Georgia families and are closely monitoring the situation,” DHS said in a release. “For the latest information, please visit dhs.georgia.gov.”

More than 687,000 Georgia households rely on SNAP assistance each month. The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank said earlier this week it is already seeing more families turn to its network for food help as the shutdown continues.
