Georgia Public Safety Training Center opens on Middle Georgia State College campus

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) is now located on Middle Georgia State College campus in Macon.

“Police officer drop the weapon don’t make me shoot you,” says Mike Barton, Georgia Public Safety Training Center Academy Manager during a simulation demonstration.

The demonstration assist cadets in understanding how to use “good judgement” before they shoot, explained Barton.

It is just one of many training lessons the cadets at the new GPSTC are learning, while taking an 11-week course in preparation for becoming first responders.

“We teach them to shoot, we teach them to drive, we teach them constitutional law, we teach them criminal procedure, and we teach them Georgia law,” says Barton.

Cadet Nicholas Middleton is the president of his class. He says he is likes learning from the experts.

“We are working with members of our society that have been doing this for years,” says Middleton. “They have the knowledge and first hand experience, and they are instilling it in us. it’s really interesting and really exciting to learn.”

The GPSTC is in the college’s Community Education Center.

“We are proud that they have made this their home, on our campus,” says Middle Georgia State College President, Christopher Blake. “We can provide a state of the art facility, where the cadets can learn about law enforcement and develop their skills.”

The college’s advance technology will be beneficial for training, according to Bibb County Sheriff’s Col. Henderson Carswell.

“At this college campus, with all the changes in technology we’ll be able to incorporate some of that into the training for the new law enforcement candidates,” says Col. Carswell.

Middle Georgia State College Office of Academic Affairs is working to develop an associate degree in public safety. The cadets who are training at the college can use their course work toward obtaining the degree.
