Georgia Power Paints Home for MLK A Day of Service
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It was not a day off for some Georgia Power employees,
but a day on.
Every year they choose a project, to commemorate the national Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Day of Service.” This year, they spruced up a home where children are mentored.
More than 18 Georgia Power employees painted the Adopt a Role Model House, located at 455 Craft Street in Macon.
“We chose this project because, once Ms. Tina Dennard mentioned that the house needed painting, I came over and took a look and it’s just great project to do on such a beautiful day,” says Theresa Robinson, Georgia Power External Affairs Manager.
Some of the children mentored at the home chipped in to help with the sprucing up. Georgia Power employee, Broadus Williams took that opportunity to impart his wisdom into the young men.
“I try to tell the young men, that one day they’ll be painting their own houses,” says Williams. “So, this is an opportunity for them to learn how to paint because most of them have never painted before.”
Other volunteers from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Campaign for Education picked up paint brushes too.
“We are just out about doing service,” says Bruce Carter. “We’re here promoting the mentoring minds, which is an effort to get college students to mentor younger children so they can just become great citizens.”
Some volunteers taught children inside the house during the mini-renovation. Bibb County Deputy Timothy Rivers says he remembers when he was 13-years-old and worked with a mentor from the Adopt a Role Model program.
Now, he says he is giving back by becoming a mentor.
“I’m actually going to be adopting a protégé today,” says Rivers. “I’m getting his contact information so, that we can get together and hangout sometimes. I can take him out to the movies or just do something positive.”
The Georgia Power volunteers say it was rewarding to pay it forward during the MLK “Day of Service.”
