Georgia National Fairgrounds hosts South Georgia Team Roping Championship

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – More than 1,800 people from around the country went to the South Georgia Team Roping Championship this weekend at the Georgia National Fairgrounds.

The event was divided into divisions based on skill level. Participants paid $100 to enter the contest. Winners of each division received an average of $4,000-$6,000.

“This event has been going on here for over a decade and it helps brings over $250,000 to Perry’s economy,” Jx2 Productions President John Johnson says. “People of all ages participate in this event, with the youngest being an eight-year-old and the oldest being grandparents.”

The championship began on Friday and ended Saturday.

“I brought my kids to see the horses and skill level of these guys,” Jessie Tyson explains. “It amazes me to see how fast these guys rope up the cattle.”

Johnson mentions there are only fifteen of these events east of the Mississippi River.
