Georgia National Fair security prepares for big crowd

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia National Fair is one of Middle Georgia’s largest events. Last year, they broke the attendance record with more than 500,000 people.

Sunday night’s Las Vegas shooting in a big crowd, was an eyeopener to the fair’s security.

“It’s not one of those you can even plan for. You have to take it as it comes,” said Georgia National Fair Marketing Director, Keaton Walker.

Walker says the fair has always had a strong law enforcement presence, and they will continue this year.

“We have a large crowd, during this event, so we’re just doing the best we can,” said Georgia National Fairgrounds Public Safety Directo, Chief Elbert Slappy.

Chief Slappy says officers have a plan, especially after Sunday night’s attack.

“Of course it will have you more on alert, but there’s nothing that we plan to do other than our normal procedure,” said Chief Slappy.

There’s an event action plan all officers are aware of in case anything goes wrong.

“We use all law enforcement around the area, Houston County Sheriff’s Department, Perry P.D., the state patrol, GBI and other agencies as well,” said Chief Slappy.

Chief Slappy would not go into specifics of the plans, but he wants you to know, officers will be watching. You can do your part to help, as well.

“Be vigilant of any suspicious activities or people, because you never know,” said Chief Slappy.

Call 911 immediately if you see any suspicious activity.
