Georgia Congressman Not Convinced on Syria Decisions

WASHINGTON, D.C. (41NBC/WMGT) – As tension continues to grow on Capitol Hill over a Syria decision, one Georgia Congressmen is voicing his concern over President Obama’s push for military action.

U.S. Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) believes putting boots on the ground is a tremendous risk, and defending Syrian citizens will come at a high cost for everyone involved.

Congressman Scott told 41 NBC’s Taylor Terrell during a phone interview he is not impressed by congressional breifings.

“I’m not convinced that a Strike in Syria is the righ thing for the United States from a national security standpoint, and I haven’t seen nothing in the intelligence breifings to lead me to believe that we should take action,” says Scott.

President Obama plans to address Congress this week about the decision to strike in Syria, but Scott feels it is not in America’s best interest to get invovled with issues overseas. 

“The United States can not be the police force,” Scott said, ” and I’ll tell you, quite honestly, I think this is an opportunity to reconfirm our support for Israel, and other allies. Perhaps a better way to handle this would be to strengthen our allies, and make sure they have the equipment they need to protect themselves, and that part of the world.”

In a statement sent to 41 NBC, Congressman Sanford Bishop (GA-02) talked about the debate, and how Congress should decide if and how we take action. 

Congressman Bishop said, “Without a doubt, the use of chemical weapons flies in the face of established international agreements, and is an abomination of basic human rights.”

He also added, “while I applaud the President’s efforts to reach out to Congress, any proposal to be voted upon should enumerate clear-cut objectives, should be thoroughly debated, and should keep in mind the full consequences of increased military action in the Middle East.”
