MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The GBI is investigating the death of a Georgia College student in Milledgeville, according to Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Ken Garland.
Garland tells 41NBC the body of a female GC student was found in an apartment on campus around 7 a.m. Monday.
Georgia College spokesperson Brittiny Johnson identified the student at 21-year-old junior Lauren Gainey. Johnson says she was living in the Village Apartments on the west campus on Highway 441.
Johnson tells 41NBC Gainey was found by her roommate Monday morning. Georgia College Public Safety responded to the scene. The case is being investigated by the campus police, Milledgeville Police, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Johnson says the investigation is ongoing. She adds counseling services are on hand for students in the residence hall and any others who knew Gainey.
“Our counseling the department was on scene dealing with the students that were in the residence halls and being able to console them in any way necessary,” Johnson said.
Baldwin County Coroner John Gonzalez tells 41NBC he doesn’t suspect any foul play. He says preliminary findings from the autopsy show no signs of bodily injuries and that Gainey’s body had been released to her family.
