MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – George Thomas declared his candidacy for the District 6 Macon-Bibb County Commission seat on Tuesday.
According to a campaign announcement on Facebook, he wants to be the change he hopes to see in the community.
“As I sit back and look at the current state of Macon, I am encouraged at how far we have come, but I am also astonished at the potential we have yet to grasp,” the announcement stated.
A Westside High School graduate, Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree from Savannah State University and a master’s from Valdosta State University.
He currently serves as Office + Leasing Manager at NewTown Macon, according to that organization’s website. His career includes contributions to mental health and housing through his role at River Edge Behavioral Health, where, according to his bio on newtownmacon.com, he was responsible for coordinating the moves of more than 250 tenants in the 200 plus properties owned or sub-leased by River Edge throughout Middle Georgia.
Thomas is an active member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and was recognized for his service with the Superior Service Man of the Year award in 2013.

Friends & Family,
“Four years ago, I took a leap of faith. A leap to help make Macon a better place. A better place to live, work, grow, and flourish for not only this generation but for the generations to come. That leap has led me to work directly with the school board, serving on committees to improve our public school system in and out of the classroom. Overseeing numerous improvements to our schools and sporting facilities to help give our youth the things they need to succeed. Showing our brilliant young men and women, they can indeed be whatever they want. Also, in those four years, I have shown our seniors that we are supposed to help take care of them as they age. Carry the torch they have carried for years to the younger generations as we raise them. As I sit back and look at the current state of Macon, I am encouraged at how far we have come, but I am also astonished at the potential we have yet to grasp. I, George Thomas, want to be the change I want to see in my community. It starts with being comfortable being uncomfortable. There is no time like now, so what better time than now. To my Macon family, I am glad to announce that I am running for the District 6 Macon-Bibb County Commission Seat. “A Better Future Starts Today.””
Raymond Wilder is the current District 6 Commissioner. He announced last month he plans to run for re-election.
