GC Women’s Basketball Team Drops Conference Tilt to Mountain Lions, 59-45

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s basketball team (13-4, 6-4 PBC) had its two-game winning streak snapped by Young Harris College (12-4, 7-2 PBC), 59-45 Saturday afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena. The 45-Bobcat points were a season low as Georgia College suffered only its second loss on the road this season.

Junior Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) was the game’s only double-digit scorer with 11 points, while adding a team-high six boards. Junior Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) added eight points, while freshman LaRice Walker (Franklin, Ga.) scored seven to go with a team-high five assists. Senior Thresia Elskamp (Potosi, Wis.) also scored seven and added five boards. Senior Abby Slocumb (Suwanee, Ga.) had a game-high three blocks placing her at No. 5 on the Georgia College all-time blocks list with 92. She surpassed Marquita Driskell (05-07).

Things started out promising for the Bobcats as Elskamp buried a three less than a minute into the contest that gave Georgia College a lead it wouldn’t relinquish until about six minutes left in the opening half. The Mountain Lions went on an 11-point run to go up 20-15 and never looked back. Young Harris College took a seven-point lead into the intermission at 27-20.

In the second half, the Mountain Lions went on runs of five-, seven-, and six-points, respectively, to seal the win. The Bobcats were out-rebounded 30-44, and matched a season-low in shooting percent from the floor at .304.

The Mountain Lions had no double-digit scorers, but all 10 participants had at least a point. Breanna Gleason led Young Harris College with eight points. Peyton Robertson, Lauren Smith, and Ladondra Johnson scored eight apiece with the latter adding a game-high 14 boards. Smith added to her conference lead in assists with a game-high seven, while Kaycee Cash added seven boards. Mountain Lion head coach Brenda Paul earned her 500th collegiate win with her team on a roll winning eight of their last nine.

The Bobcats’ next matchup will be against Clayton State University Wednesday, Jan. 29 for a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tilt starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Centennial Center.
